I am from a small town in Wi. My mother was a portrait artist and made me her model several times. I think I was hooked to follow in her steps in the art world. She and several other friends started an art club and would set up their easels at her restaurant after closing hours and paint into the night. They named the club The Rural Rembrandts which is still going strong to this day. When the group started back in the 40's they became the founders of Wisconsin Rural Art Association which was affiliated with the University of Wi., Madison. The reason was to encourage art in other rural areas and to form clubs throughout the state and have art shows. Each club would have a once a year art show in their town and the winners of those regional shows would go on to state to get judged again This process is still going on. I have been a member for many years and have won several of those awards..
I started working in oils and have dabbled in acrylics and pastels. My love of art now is using gourds as my canvas. I cut, gouge, woodburn, sculpt, stain, weave and paint those wonderful forms. It is fun to come up with embellishments from nature. I spend the winters in Arizona where gourd art is very popular and the natural embellishments are easy to find. My second love is golf and thankfully my friends understand when I hold up the game to fetch bark off a tree or pick up some dried plant that tells me it should be attached to a gourd. Such fun.
